Al Rise

Nath Doughtie, Class of '55, has just published a good novel set in Gainesville, Florida, home of the champion Gators of the University of Florida. Doughtie, a retired judge from Gainesville, wrote about a judge and lawyers and love and tribulation in Gainesville (well, it includes other places in Florida). Anyone familiar with northeast Florida will enjoy it. Shucks, even if you don't have any experience with Alachua County, you'll find it a good read. At $14.31 a copy from Amazon.com, this 306 page novel published by Trafford Publishing on May 14, 2007 is a virtual steal! What books about Northeast Florida do you like? Perhaps the book only uses part of the area as a setting.

John Grisham, The Brethren uses Atlantic Beach and Neptune Beach.

Larry Baker, The Flamingo Rising purports to take place on the shore between Ponte Vedra and St. Augustine. The characters go often to St. Augustine and Jacksonville.

Amelia Clinch, Murder in Fernandina was written by a writers' group in Fernandina. Not bad and has a lot of local history included.

David Tuttle, The Leopard of Fenandina (A Lt. Wilson Mystery) uses information from the earlier book (Tuttle was one of the writers' group). It's a much better read.

Bad Vibrations

A serial killer is on the loose in La La Land, but you may die laughing before the next victim is found.

Dan Anderson - Class of 1963
Chauncey McFadden, a portly and low-rent PI, may be in over his head when he is hired to find a murderer who kills female victims in a most unusual way. The trail of this serial killer leads through a cast of zany and memorable characters that includes a quirky police lieutenant, a crime syndicate boss, a secret government intelligence agency, and an international consortium of terrorists. The body count climbs as Chauncey battles danger and intrigue to bring the killer to justice.

Bad Vibrations is an unforgettable romp through the seamy noir underbelly of Southern California, and shows how much fun reading can be in the hands of an irreverent craftsman. It is already the winner of 5 literary awards:

The Independent Publishers IPPY Award—Silver Medal for Best Regional Fiction 2009
The Florida Writers Association Royal Palm Award for Best Published Mystery 2008
The Books and Authors Best Mystery Book of the Year Award 2008

Fletcher/Fluke54 Here comes the Judge - "All Rise!" 0 Oct 1 2007, 7:00 PM EDT by Fletcher/Fluke54

I just read Nath Doughtie's book "All Rise," and enjoyed it. I was also pleased that the book was printed "with minimum 30% recycled fibre," and that the print shop runs on "green energy" from solar, wind and other environmentally-friendly power sources." Acknowledgements amused me when I realized that Nat had thanked several dead writers who were referenced in his book (Hemmingway, Shakespeare, Browning, Poe, etc.). The "Dead Poet's Society?" The funniest part coincides with the books title "All Rise," which gave me a hearty LOL. In the beginning, the main character is named AC, who is a CIRCUIT judge. Thus, I wondered if Nat had planned to instill electricity into his novel? As Don Mabry mentioned, "All Rise" is a good read, and I highly recommend it. We used to call him "Nat" at Fletcher, but it appears that "Nath" may be more apropos for "His Honor," - in my opinion. As an aside, much of Nath's novel keys in on Micanopy, Florida, which is near a small town that I an researching named Flewellen. However, it went out of existance years ago, so information has become a challenge. Nath's descriptions of several areas near Gainesville are right on target. Internet photos can prove it!

Pat Frank, who lived in Atlantic Beach, wrote some novels that involved Florida. One had a main character going into Millie's Bar.
