Before they opened the road, it was miles of concrete, barricaded off. My dad taught me to drive there when I was 12, and would let me go pretty fast, because it was so empty. Ole Jimmie Jarboe didn't pay much attention to us underage drivers as long as we behaved ourselves.
Late nights the new road was a popular drag strip for some of those bad boys with their bad cars. I heard. |

We who honed our tennis skills on the courts near the end of Beach Blvd., with the tricky offshore breezes, gave us an advantage over visiting players. I recall my longest tournament match of 5 sets & over 60 games. Fletcher 1954 classmate Gene Nelson watched the first few games, then went to our Fletcher football game, & we were still playing tennis when he came back after the game. If someone hit the ball over the tall fence, it would bounce across the 4 lanes of Beach Blvd., & it was a good little run to retrieve the ball.
A block away was our great little library, which even impressed me as a teenager. Also, Arnot's Bakery & Restaurant was nearby, & my family used to walk there for both food & doughnuts. Since my Mom wasn't a good cook, this was our "fine dining" quite often. |
