There was a young lady I dated briefly that attended Fletcher & was a bowler. Her name was Nancy Hires & would have been in the class of 64 or 65. If you have any knowledge of her please email me at halfbake_wing@yahoo.com

She was/is a singer who had some minor hits. She dated Bobby Darin. She was in the movie "Go, Johnny, Go" in 1959. Her biography says she was born in Jacksonville in 1938.
She went to Fletcher but apparently left before graduation. Does anyone remember her and does anyone know what happeneed to her?"

Fletcher High helped to "develop" three outstanding people, who also helped significantly in the development of Jacksonville University - Mrs. Helen Merrill, Dr. Garth Ackridge, and Donald Ames. Has Fletcher contributed any others?

Dr. Garth Akridge taught geometry - "the mathematical study of the properties of lines, angles, surfaces, and solids." Well...our whole class utilized all four during lunchtime. The good Doctor always locked his classroom, so someone got the bright idea to open a window, and get the whole class back into their seats before he unlocked it. Even the girls agreed, which made it even more fun......ahh....geometrically speaking. Dr. Akridge had a totally surprised look on his face when he entered the classroom, but it quickly turned a bright red while he was "blowing his stack." I don't recall anyone getting into trouble over it, but it was a hoot.

Dr. Akridge was my grandfather. What a great story to hear. I would love to hear anything else you have on him. I read this to my father and he loved it. He was one of my all time favorite people. Thanks so much for the story. Got any others about him?
In December, he is being honored for being the first president of Jacksonville University.

Anyone know what happened to Sarah Lee Langston--Fletcher class of 1962? She lived on Bay Street in Neptune Beach. She was captain of the cheerleaders that year. Thanks

COACH JARRETT TAKE MY BEST SHOT

One day while standing in the gym, I was having a heated argument with another student. Our coaches had a tendency to walk by and punch athletes on the shoulder as a typical greeting. Coach Don Jarrett had walked up behind me, "greeted" me, and I spun around and landed a strong punch to his massive chest. With me being only 126 pounds, and him a former guard for Purdue, he didn't even budge. I took off....not only running, but stayed off from school for a few days. Finally, a friend told me that Coach had "just laughed it off," so I could come back to school without getting killed. Coach and I both laughed about it later. Actually, we were blessed with good (& well liked) coaches at Fletcher, and I believe that the "Class of '54" proved it. If I recall correctly, we were State Champs in basketball and track, plus possibly the swimming team. Tommy Crankshaw was the State Champ in cross-country, and Anita Wadswoth in tennis. Does anyone remember if our band members were State Champions too?

The above photo of Fletcher doesn't show the flagpole, but it stood tall near the sidewalk. Late one night, "someone" shinnied up the pole and tied a double-D sized bra to the top. However, it started to rain, and he came down about 3-times faster than he went up. It was a glorious sight to see the next morning, as the offshore breeze really made it stand out. I recall that a teen named David Fox got blamed for it - but they were wrong.
