Rick Shore Class of '65

By Drew Dixon
Former Jacksonville Beach City Councilman Rick Shore died Saturday while on a mountain bike excursion with friends in the wilds of North Carolina. Shore, 64, who was a councilman for most of the 1990s and into the early 2000s, was riding his mountain bike on a trail with three friends in the DuPont State Forest outside Brevard when he fell at the top of a ridge and virtually died on the spot. He was on the trail with Sam Veal, founder of the Jacksonville Beach Springing the Blues Festival, and two other men who are members of the Suwannee Bicycle Association. "We had done a ride on one of the trails," said Veal. "When Rick got up to the top of the rise where the trailhead was, he fell over. He didn't move and didn't respond immediately." Emergency medical technicians were called to the scene and Shore was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The collapse came a week after Shore was given a battery of tests, Veal said. "What was confounding about this was that about a week ago, Ricky had a complete cardiology exam and he had been cleared to keep doing what he was doing," Veal said.
Veal said he spoke to one of the officials involved in the autopsy and was given an explanation of Shore's death. "They said it was ‘sudden cardiac death.' He had some pretty heavily calcified arteries. A piece of the calcified plaque broke and lodged and obstructed and the heart seized," Veal said. Shore served two terms on the council.

"He served it with distinction, honor and integrity. He was not a politician; he was a public servant," Veal said. Veal said he knew Shore for much of his life. "I've known him for over 30 years but we got closer and became friends when he was on the council. He was the first person I approached about the Springing the Blues Festival. That was in 1991," Veal said. Shore's family will have a gathering and celebration of his life for friends and family at the Shore home on St. Augustine Boulevard in Jacksonville Beach beginning at 4

Dezmond WatersDezmond Waters

Date: Sat, 16 Apr 2011 12:02:56 -0400

To my family and friends,

Yesterday was a good day. There were flowers to admire and water, family ancestry to work on, a gin and tonic on the patio, and of course, chocolate treats after dinner.

And finally, around 11:OO pm, the good fight was over.

It is time to celebrate 68 years of my full and well lived life.

"veni, vidi, vici",

Dezmond

I want to let all of you know that Dezmond died last night. It was fast and painless. Once again, he is at Mayo--our second home for much of the past year. As many of you know, Dezmond was a brain donor to help further the research for MSA, a rare and little known neuro-degenerative disease.

Arrangements are still pending. I will notify everyone when we have finalized plans.

Thanks to all of you for your support and love over the years.

Love, Janice

James Dezmond Waters III |VisitGuestBook
WATERS James Dezmond Waters III, 68, of Atlantic Beach, FL passed away on Friday, April 15, 2011. He died at home, peacefully, after a 5 year struggle with Multiple System Atrophy. He was born in Jacksonville to Martina Bell Jones and James Dezmond Waters Jr. He was older brother to Angela Waters and they spent their childhood in Murray Hill, moving to Atlantic Beach in June 1956. He attended St. Paul's Catholic, Riverside and Fletcher High School. After graduating from Belmont Abby College in Charlotte, NC he returned home to Jacksonville and taught at Bishop Kenny High School and Fletcher High School. He received his Masters in Teaching from Jacksonville University in 1966. And after attending both the University of Florida and The University of Guadalajara, Mexico, he settled on Florida State University where he finished four years of doctoral studies in Humanities. During that time he was fortunate to study at the University's Florence, Italy campus, an adventure that he was able to share with his wife, that would influence all of his adult life. At one of the many parties he would enjoy hosting, Dezmond met his future wife Janice, the identical twin sister of one of his father's nurses. They were married on August 9, 1969. After their return from Tallahassee and Florence, they settled in Jacksonville to continue their teaching careers. Whether teaching Latin, Humanities, World History, Spanish, English or European History, Dezmond brought his love of History, Art, Culture and Travel alive for his students. One of his greatest pleasures in life was getting the occasional postcard from a former student exclaiming that they had finally seen Brunelleschi's doors in person! A dedicated teacher, Dezmond found great satisfaction in making a difference in his students' lives and exposing them all to the world beyond their neighborhood. Dezmond and Janice raised their two children, Blythe and Dez in Atlantic Beach along with their extended family and menagerie. Locals will probably remember Dezmond's 'duck yard' fondly as it was much closer than Jarboe park for an afternoon sharing of breadcrumbs with the ducks. As Atlantic Beach grew from a sleepy little seaside town with dirt roads into the beautiful community it is today, Dezmond spent much of his free time tending his gardens and serving on the Atlantic Beach City Commission. He took great pride in his service to his community and his legacy survives through his work with the the North Duval Beaches Association, Town Center and the Northeast Florida League of Cities. _______________________________________Mary Vona Gonzales

Mary Vona Gonzales
Mary Vona Gonzales GONZALES Mary Vona Gonzales, Homemaker, Entrepreneur and Grandmother to Everyone, died August 15, 2010. You couldn't blame them for thinking the song from the 1940's 'I Found My Million Dollar Baby At The Five and Ten Cent Store' was written just for them - after all, Mary Vona was working at Floyd's Five & Dime in Jacksonville Beach, Florida when she met the young soldier from Texas. Walter Gonzales would have to go fight the good fight and come back a multi-decorated war hero. It would take something as big as World War II or as intrusive as death to keep them apart for long. She would continue working and taking care of people until he returned. Because that was Mary's life - working and taking care of people. To work was to live and to live was to work. Whether it was helping her parents or working at Floyd's, you kept going. While you owned and ran the Beaches' seafood market or managed the S&H Green Stamp Store you also had to raise four kids, you had to keep going. As the children left the nest, you continued your businesses at Mrs. G's Laundry and Mrs. G's Nursery because there was always more work to be done and people who needed you, so you just kept going. That's how most people knew them - they were 'Mary & Wally' to their large extended families, 'Grannie & Pop' to their more immediate brood, and 'Mr. & Mrs. G' to the wide world that came to know them. For they never met a stranger and were generous to a fault. If you were having trouble making ends meet, they would extend you credit for your seafood or laundry or mending because they knew you'd be good for it. And, everyone knew Mrs. G was an exceptional seamstress. She sewed all her life and could create outfits from scratch as well as mend anything you brought her. If you had to work and needed to pick up your kids late from the nursery, Mrs. G would wait for you. And, if you were having a tough time you could pay her later - weeks later, months later, even years later, or, unbelievably, maybe not at all - because you have to take care of the children. When other nurseries turned away infants because they were harder and less profitable to handle, Mrs. G would take them in, care for them and feed them as if they were all her own. It was magical how she could produce huge meals from seemingly nothing. Where other day-care might provide crackers, at Mrs. G's kids got roast beef and potatoes and greens and salad - no one left Mrs. G's table hungry. That was a big part of Mary's nature - she had to take care of others. She took care of everyone - husband, kids, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family. Taking care of others was keeping her young. Even in her 80's it didn't faze her to drive across the state alone, if necessary, to visit or console an ailing sister-in-law. She commented occasionally on the aches and pains, but that was just part of living a long life, just something you dealt with. That is, until the pain finally knocked her down and she couldn't get up. The doctors ascribed it to old age as well until they found the cancer that had completely replaced three of her vertebrae. It was a miracle she was able to function as long as she did, but those Vona's are a tough breed. Despite her excruciating suffering she stayed off the pain medications for a day so she would be clear headed when her eldest son came to see her. True to form, her first words to him were 'Wow! You've really gotten gray'. And, as her four children stood weeping around her bed she told them '87-years - that's a good long time'. Eight-seven years is a good long time, but still too short for those of us left behind. And, now, though they were never really apart, Mr. and Mrs. G are truly together again. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 21, 2010 in St. Paul's Catholic Church, 224 N. 5th St., Jacksonville Beach, with Reverend Jose Kallukalam as Celebrant. Tim Ann Hancock Parker Tim Ann Hancock Parker
February 23,1931 – June 16, 2010Godspeed to Tim Ann Hancock Parker, one of the most charming, gracious people her family and friends have known. Tim died suddenly Wednesday, June 16th, while arranging favorite pictures of her husband, Billy, around a vase of flowers she kept fresh on his bedside table. Though her husband died August 6, 2009, one day shy of their 55th wedding anniversary, Tim continued to live fully—taking courses, making trips with friends, writing and discussing poetry, contributing to human rights and environmental causes, and spending time with family. Tim Ann was born February 23, 1931, in Jacksonville, Florida, the much-adored only child of Clara Ilona Kendrick of Montgomery, Alabama, and Colonel Thurman Arthur Hancock, of Springfield, Tennessee. In a Florida that was, as she said, “still paradise,” she grew up mainly in Neptune Beach, a few blocks from the boy who would be her future husband. Family lore has it that, even as children, they were destined for each other, because he found an albino horned toad on the beach not long after the one her parents had given her for Christmas escaped its enclosure. Tim attended the University of Florida, earning degrees in English and education. She married William Parker in Jacksonville in 1954 and three years later had their only child, Catherine Nevil, in DeRidder, Louisiana. Her first teaching job was at Melrose School across from Chiappini’s, and in the early 60s, she taught English at Fletcher High School in Neptune Beach. She is remembered affectionately by students across her years of teaching. Her married life was intense and exciting: Tim and Bill moved to Manhattan around 1965, where they expanded their professional, intellectual, and cultural horizons and made many friends in the arts and humanities. Tim worked as a copyeditor in the children’s book division of Harper & Row—a job she loved. In the early 70s, she and Bill moved to Connecticut, settling near the University of Connecticut, Storrs, where Tim worked at the Homer Babbidge Library as an art and design librarian—another favorite job—until her retirement in 1995. Tim and Bill returned to Florida in 2002 to be close to family, settling in Gainesville, where Tim helped her husband through a hard illness. Tim Ann is survived by her daughter, Nevil, her son-in-law, Douglas Theriaque, by cousin Pete Hancock, and by many Hancocks, who gather biennially in Tennessee for a big family reunion. A memorial service for Tim Ann will be announced at a later date. Those wishing to honor her might plant a tree or make a donation in her name to Heifer International, Putnam Land Conservancy, Alachua Conservation Trust, the Environmental Defense Fund, or Audubon of Florida. A wonderful storyteller and a seeking, laughing person like her husband, Tim was a devoted wife and mother, a person of great strength and joyous heart, receptive to people and natural beauty, who felt genuinely happy each day to live, to strive and learn, to watch the seasons in and out, and at whose birth, I think, “There was a star danced.” We grieve her loss. http://nevilparker.net/________________________________Alan G. Cornelius Joseph "Neal" Ganzel Sr.

Neal was born in Quincy, Mass. in March of 1924. He died May 3l, 2009 at his home in Vilano Beach, Fla. Neal's father was a professional baseball player, and his career carried the family from Minneapolis to St. Louis to Selma, Ala., to Sarasota and finally to Atlantic Beach (shortly before the outbreak of WW11).

While attending Fletcher, he helped carry the FHS football squad (as a starting end)to several victories in the 1941-42 season. Following Pearl Harbor, he left Fletcher and enlisted in the US Naval Air Force and was sent to the Pacific in 1944 as a mechanic/gunner. He saw combat as a waist gunner on a PB4Y2 patrol bomber in the Phillipines. After the war's end, he returned to Florida, finished high school and entered Stetson University where he studied engineering while honing his skills on the baseball and football fields. He then transferred to the University of Florida.

Neal married his Atlantic Beach neighbor and pre-war sweetheart Elizabeth Hooker in 1948. Needing to provide for his new and growing family, he left UF and found work in Jacksonville with the Strachan Shipping Company in 1950; he worked there until 1986, eventually becoming terminal superintendent of Strachan's operations at both Commodore's Point and the JAXPORT terminals. On the docks he was known as a profoundly competent problem-solver, and to the longshoremen as a fair-minded and decent stevedoring superintendent.

Elizabeth and Neal built their first home in North (Vilano) Beach on the ocean. In 1985 they relocated to a marsh-front property on Palm Street. Both of these North Beach homes were designed, executed and decorated by he and his wife, and showcased his talents in carpentry and woodworking. He continued to love and use these skills during retirement, and eventually became an accomplished wood-turner, specializing in native Florida woods.

Neal continued fishing well into his final years, and knew well the rivers and creeks of the St. John's and Duval County waterways, and helped impart a love of the outdoors to his children and grandchildren. A talented gardener and cook, he and Elizabeth were also eager travelers and enjoyed frequent trips to Appalachia, the Florida Keys and elsewhere during their retirement years. In the early 70s, Neal earned his civilian pilot's license, enjoying again a skill he had first learned during the war.

After Elizabeth's death in 2000, Neal continued to live a full, active andindependent life
for nine more years.

Neal was predeceased by his brother, Foster Jr. He is survived by his son Neal, Jr. and wife Suzanne of Ormond Beach, daughter Shea Vlcek of Jacksonville, and daughter Cathleen Litvinas of Palmyra, Va., his sisters, Yvonne Martin of Melbourne and Mickey McCormick of St. Augustine, brother Owen of Jacksonville, several nieces and nephews and numerous friends.

Frank Doggett

Noted educator dies at 96
Doggett longtime Fletcher principal

By Jessie-Lynne Kerr
Times-Union staff writer

Frank A. Doggett, who as the founding principal of Fletcher Junior-Senior High School nurtured the educational pursuits of four decades of Beaches public school students, died Monday of heart failure. He was 96.

Mr. Doggett started as a teacher at Landon Junior-Senior High School in 1933, then served as principal at Fletcher from 1937 to 1969. The final two years before his retirement in 1971 were as principal of Lee High School.

But he also gained a national reputation in American literature. The University of Florida awarded Mr. Doggett an honorary Doctor of Letters degree in 1967 for his book, Stevens' Poetry of Thought.

Mr. Doggett was cited by the university for having made a major contribution toward understanding the work of Wallace Stevens, who ranks along with Robert Frost as one of the great American poets of the 20th century. Mr. Doggett also published essays on Shakespeare and John Donne as well as articles on high school administration.

"He always inspired us to have interests beyond our usual fields," said his daughter, Jean Shepard of Atlantic Beach, herself an educator at Florida Community College at Jacksonville South Campus.

She said her father valued education and guided his students to go to good colleges.

"He wanted them to expand their horizons beyond their local community," she said.

Mr. Doggett, who lived in the Fleet Landing retirement community in Atlantic Beach, himself had varied interests, she added, with his favorite recreation being fishing.

Ish Brant worked for Mr. Doggett as Fletcher's athletic director and then was his boss when Brant was elected superintendent of schools.

Brant recalled that Mr. Doggett had good offers to teach at the University of Florida but never accepted them. "I really think Frank didn't want to leave the Beaches and the great fishing," Brant said. Mr. Doggett many times headed out to Mayport after locking up the school for the day to get in some fishing before sunset, he added.

Brant described Mr. Doggett as a man exceptionally well-prepared as an educator who had good rapport with everyone -- his students, his faculty members and the PTA. "He was one swell guy," Brant said.

Mr. Doggett was born in Jacksonville and received his bachelor's degree from Rollins College and his master's from Emory University. He also studied at the University of Florida, Columbia University and the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn.

In addition to his daughter, Mr. Doggett is survived by his son, John L. Doggett of Danville, Calif.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A private funeral will be conducted later.

The family suggests memorials to the South Gallery at Florida Community College at Jacksonville South Campus, 11901 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32246.

I knew Mike at Fletcher as he was a Junior the year I graduated in 1965. I met him again in the mid 80's when he put in the lawn irrigation system at my house on Oakwood Rd.
He knew his profession well and never failed to come over and fix my irrigation system when I managed to mess it up. He contributed to the fabric that makes the Beaches what they are. He will be missed.

Does anyone know the causes and year of their deaths? My sister was married to Ray in the early 60's.
