Fletcher/Fluke54 16TH AVENUE SOUTH ACCESS RAMP 1 Feb 14 2007, 9:56 AM EST by Anonymous

In the 40's & 50's, I remember when barefoot boys backed up on this ramp to make a running start, to skip across the very hot soft sand, to reach the cooler/harder beach sand. We also did the same when crossing the hot pavement of First Street. During later years, when parking was allowed around this ramp, it became difficult to find a space with a short walk to the beach. Numerous cars became stuck in the soft sand there too.

A few blocks west of the ramp, the city built a nice park, which included tennis courts, plus a convenient fishing pond for children. My family & friends utilized both for many years.

As young boys, we enjoyed the adventures of helping the sailors from the local Navy Bases, who sandbagged the beachfront homes from the storm driven wave action. It was sad when we lost a dismantled home, especially whenever the owners were standing nearby crying. However, whenever we saved a home, it was a great feeling when everyone cheered.
