Pittsburgh Pirates at the beach
Feb 19 2008, 12:54 PM EST | Post edited: Feb 19 2008, 12:54 PM EST
The Pittsburgh Pirates operated a training facility or a farm team at the beach after 1954. The late Bill Foley wrote a few sentences about it. Better, Paul Marino and Joe Troupe had some direct experiences.

Can anyone tell us about the Pirates at the beach?

Don,you asked about info on the Pirates. The only path I crossed with them was at the Old Stricklands Seafood on north 1st street in 1956 (approximate).Mr B.J Strickland had the contract to feed the team their dinners.
Of course the south was still in the old Jim Crow era. So B.J. added a new dinning room on the west side behind the kitchen area to feed the black players. They used the two black kitchen worker's to serve the players. I was working part time as a bus boy. My other peers and I had no problem going back in the special room to help out the two ladies. I guess how often do you get that close to major baseball player's, I must say they were very friendly . After they left the beach, they turned the speical room into a storage area. Tom (amsterdam)

I do not remember Reggie working there. But Ken Simmons and Gordon Wilkinson, was there one summer while I was there. Then later on I would do part time work there when they needed someone. 3  out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?
