roller coaster
Feb 8 2007, 4:35 PM EST
Enjoy the articles of so many from Fletcher, most,if not all, always bring back pleasant memories. However, there was/were unhappy events as well.I was a member of the Elsir Behner Little Theatre during my Fletcher years (42-48).A fellow member worked weekends at/on the roller coaster, testing the rails, retrieving lost articles, etc, dangerous job!One Saturday, there had been a rehearsal at the "Theatre" and,I went home thereafter. The phone rang,I answered it,there had been a horrific accident,at the roller coaster site. Our fellow "thespian" had been killed at the site, hit or run over by a roller coaster wagon, having been sent up for a test run.I never went to that area, until that monstrosity was torn down.

What a terrible thing to happen. As an historian, one never wants to argue inevitability but it does seem that someone always gets hurt eventually when such machinery is involved. Farming has been a very dangerous occupation because of machines.

Numerous farmers, & former farmers, came through our Aberdeen South Dakota federal building cafeteria line for 25 years. It was very noticeable that over two dozen had one or more missing fingers. A machine with a "power take-off," was a leading culprit. & usually did worse damage. Most farm kids there couldn't swim, but every year, a few of them would drown accidentally in the cattle watering holes - which are similar to a rectangular pond 20 X 60 feet. Falling into a grain bin & suffocating was another problem area. The blizzards every year would kill a few farmers, as they built up a lifetime of courage, then would drive home for the holidays & misjudge a blizzard. However, after any accident, farmers would gather together to assist & alleviate the problem - including taking care of the crops. They just called each other, discussed it, then did it. It did make me proud to be associated with them - even though I had only married into a farm family.

The Boardwalk seemed safe in terms of machinery but we may not have heard much. People did get cut by the barnacles on the pier pilings. The lifeguard corp was good about protecting people from drowning. Do you find this valuable? |

I remember Elsie Behner's Little Theater too. We sang, acted, danced our hearts out. I never knew any locals ever rode the roller coaster, because pieces of rotten wood kept falling off. In the spring, you would see men nailing it back together. I did ride the Ferris wheel, even after I noticed that the seats were attached to the wheel with bent coathangers. Hey Beverly Roberts, remember me?
