SLIPPERY JETTIES

Do you remember how slippery those jetties were when wet? We also kept a close eye out for any rogue waves, & especially when a ship passed.

I recall as a young lad fishing out of a small rowboat in the St. Johns next to the jetties, I became seasick. As I lay back sitting on the bottom with my arm hanging over the gunnel and in the water, my Dad yelled & knocked me into the boat. When I looked, a large shark rolled past me - close enought to touch. I knew it wasn't a hammerhead, but still scared the seasickness out of me. Years later, while skin & scuba diving, I learned that sharks tend to love our Florida inlets. Even when facing a 4' shark underwater, I still had to fight the sudden fear that came over me, and try to think sensibly - and get the heck outta there slowly. My son, Michael, uses a new combination 5' spearfishing unit with a multi-shell boomstick attached.
