COACH JARRETT TAKE MY BEST SHOT
Feb 17 2007, 10:49 AM EST
One day while standing in the gym, I was having a heated argument with another student. Our coaches had a tendency to walk by and punch athletes on the shoulder as a typical greeting. Coach Don Jarrett had walked up behind me, "greeted" me, and I spun around and landed a strong punch to his massive chest. With me being only 126 pounds, and him a former guard for Purdue, he didn't even budge. I took off....not only running, but stayed off from school for a few days. Finally, a friend told me that Coach had "just laughed it off," so I could come back to school without getting killed. Coach and I both laughed about it later. Actually, we were blessed with good (& well liked) coaches at Fletcher, and I believe that the "Class of '54" proved it. If I recall correctly, we were State Champs in basketball and track, plus possibly the swimming team. Tommy Crankshaw was the State Champ in cross-country, and Anita Wadswoth in tennis. Does anyone remember if our band members were State Champions too?
